Mildred Beatrice Onley Obituary (1924 - 2018)

Mrs. Mildred Beatrice (Layer) Onley, age 93, transitioned to Glory on Monday, July 30, 2018 at her home in Adamstown, MD. She was born on October 21, 1924 in Adamstown, MD to the late George Westley and Ada Franklin Layer. She was the only surviving member of her immediate family. Mildred attended the Frederick County Public Schools and after graduating she worked various jobs until she started her career as a Cafeteria Supervisor at Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, MD. She later retired after 25 years of service from the Montgomery County School Board. Mildred was married to the late Claude Thomas Onley, better known as Tim, for 44 years. From this union, they had six children, whom they loved dearly. Mildred was a faithful servant of the Lord and lifelong member of the Buckeystown United Methodist Church #80, where she served on the Usher Board, as a Trustee, a member of the Women's Society, a Communion Steward and worked in the kitchen. Along with being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and aunt, she enjoyed playing Bingo, watching TV shows like "Walker Texas Ranger" and "The Steve Harvey Show." Mildred's greatest joy was hosting her Annual 4th of July cookout. She always had a warm and open heart, and embraced everyone she met. Mildred is survived by: two sons; Claude W. Onley (Rosemary) and Thomas F. Onley, Sr; four daughters: Susie P. Hall, Helen L. Hall (Kenny), Zelma J. Nickens (friend Quentin), and Mary C. Onley; 13 grandchildren, Ted Onley (Cassandra), Shawnnette Allen (Leigh), Lynette Whiten (Dwayne), T.J. Onley, Neal Hall IV (friend Nasie), Greg Nickens, Nicole Joseph, Jam'al Onley, Tracey Lewis (Brittany), Stephani Stockman (Charles), Kendra Hall, Thomas F. Onley, Jr. and Jared Onley; 22 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Also left to mourn Mildred are: brother in law, John H. Onley; devoted nephew, Grafton Layer; devoted nieces; Barbara Layer, Dana Lucas, and Dorothy Gorman (deceased), and devoted friend, Roslyn Gray. In addition to her parents and husband, Mildred was preceded in death by: son-in-law, Neal S. Hall III; granddaughters; Tiffany Nickens and Maryrose Onley; great-granddaughter, Reality Nolan; great-grandson, Markus Allen; brothers; Addison, William, Samuel and David Layer; sisters, Minnie Leekins, and Ada "Eadie" Ambush; and niece, Dorothy Gorman. Funeral Services will be held Friday, August 17, 2018 at Jackson Chapel United Methodist Church, 5609 Ballenger Creek Pike, Frederick, MD at 11:00 A.M., with public viewing and family hour at 10:00 a.m. A Wake will be held on Thursday, August 16 from 6-8 p.m. at Buckeystown UMC, 6923 Michaels Mill Road, Buckeystown, MD.
