Lord Nickens Obituary (1913 - 2013)

Lord D. Nickens, 99, was called home on Friday, January 4, 2013, while at Frederick Memorial Hospital.He was born August 6, 1913, in White Post, Virginia, and was the last of his immediate family, being preceded in death by his parents and twelve sisters and brothers. He served in the U. S. Army, Pacific Theater, during World War II and came home to fight for justice and equality for all people, serving as an active member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) since 1934. He served 20 years as President of the Frederick Chapter. He leaves to cherish in his memory: a loving wife, Thelma Nickens; three sons, Charles Nickens (Rose), Ronald Nickens, and Gregory Nickens (Vicky); four sister-in-laws; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. There will be a public viewing on Friday, January 11, 2013, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jackson Chapel UMC, 5609 Ballenger Creek Pike, Frederick, MD and a Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, January 12, 2013, with the family receiving friends at 11:00 a.m. and the service starting at 12:00 noon, at the International Community Church of God, 123 Byte Drive, Frederick, MD.The Reverend Ronald Simmons of Wayman AME will be officiating.Interment at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
