Dorothy "Dottie" May Onley Obituary (1929 - 2016)

Dorothy "Dottie" May Onley, 87, of Frederick, MD, passed away on October 5, 2016, at Frederick Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born June 4, 1929, she was the first child of Janie Elizabeth White Smith and George Gasaway Smith, and was the wife of the late George Patrick Onley for 60 years. Dottie May was a graduate of Lincoln High School and attended Hampton Institute, Hampton, VA. She worked as a teacher's assistant in Frederick County Public Schools for more than 30 years and was often greeted and visited by former students and colleagues. A lifelong member of Asbury United Methodist Church, she served on the Usher Board and Carnival committee and helped organize Vacation Bible School, bake sales and field trips, among other activities. She was known and loved by many in her roles as wife, mother, teacher, friend, and community member. She'll be remembered for her wonderful baking and cooking, and for being a great listener for all. Her living room was a popular venue for her many kind and loving neighbors and friends, some of whom visited daily. Dottie took great pride in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was revered by them all. She will be missed more than words can convey. She is survived by her children, Patrick Duane Onley (Dennis), Baltimore, MD, Natalie Onley Brown (Terry), Frederick, MD, Nannette Onley Hobson (Lee), Frederick, MD, and Perry Onley, Frederick, MD; granddaughters, Shallon Brown, Baltimore, MD, Laura Wilson, Austin, TX, and Kyra Wilson Cook (Eugene); great-grandsons, Alexander and Theodore Cook, Acton, MA; first cousins, Marie White Bell, Willingboro, NJ, and Alfoster Johnson (Carol); and niece, Angela Smith Grayson, York, PA; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, George Gasaway Smith, Jr.
